. Φάμελλος: Πού βρήκατε τα 15 εκατομμύρια εσείς και τα 12 που είναι στο private banking του πατέρα σας;
Σ.Φ.: Με τι;
Σ.Φ.: Με αέρα;
Π.Ψ.: Ναι.
Σ.Φ.: Είπατε με αέρα; Είπατε στην εξεταστική επιτροπή ότι υπογράψατε αέρα 15 εκατομμύρια ευρώ εγγυήσεις για τα δάνεια;
Π.Ψ.: Οχι.
Σ.Φ.: Ωραία. Την υπογράψατε με ποιο εχέγγυο, κύριε Ψυχάρη;
Σ.Φ.: Η υπογραφή σας κοστίζει 15 εκατομμύρια ευρώ;
Σ.Φ.: Θέλετε να μου δώσετε κι εμένα 15 εκατομμύρια ευρώ; Σας υπογράφω. Θα μου τα δώσετε, κύριε Ψυχάρη;

With Greece currently leading the EU, let's take a look at these 11 Great Greeks - Past, Present and Future - who have each played an important role in our Europe.

(Read from top left picture to bottom right picture)

Eleftherios Venizelos was an eminent Greek revolutionary, a prominent and illustrious statesman, and a charismatic leader of the early 20th century. Elected several times as Prime Minister of Greece, serving from 1910 to 1920 and from 1928 to 1932, Venizelos had such profound influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece that he is credited with being ‘the maker of modern Greece’.
Konstantinos G Karamanlis was a four-time Prime Minister, twice President of the Third Hellenic Republic and a towering figure of Greek politics whose political career spanned much of the latter half of the 20th century. Karamanlis was convinced that Greece's membership of the EEC would ensure political stability in a nation having just undergone a transition from dictatorship to democracy. In May 1979 he signed the full Treaty of Accession. Greece became the tenth member of the EEC on 1 January 1981, three years earlier than the original protocol envisioned and despite the freezing of the Treaty of Accession during the junta (1967-1974).
Manolis Andronikos was an archaeologist and a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He conducted archaeological research in Veroia, Naousa, Kilkis, Chalkidiki and Thessaloniki, but his main research was done in Vergina. His greatest discovery occurred on November 8 1977 when he found a tomb at Vergina which was identified as that of Philip II of Macedon. It had not been plundered and contained many valuable items, such as a gold larnax.
Odysseas Elytis was regarded as a major exponent of romantic modernism in Greece and in the world. In 1979, the Nobel Prize for Literature was bestowed on him. Elytis' poetry has marked, through an active presence of over forty years, a broad spectrum of subject matter and stylistic touch with an emphasis on the expression of that which is rarefied and passionate. He borrowed certain elements from Ancient Greece and Byzantium but devoted himself exclusively to today's Hellenism.
Constantin Carathéodory or Konstantinos Karatheodoris was a mathematician. He made significant contributions to the theory of functions of a real variable, the calculus of variations, and measure theory. His work also includes important results in conformal representations and in the theory of boundary correspondence. In 1909, Carathéodory pioneered the Axiomatic Formulation of Thermodynamics along a purely geometrical approach. He also taught Albert Einstein. During one of his last public appearances, Einstein said: “You ask me to answer all sorts of questions, but no one has ever wanted to know who was the teacher who showed me the way to higher mathematical science, thought and research. I simply say that my teacher was the unrivalled Greek Konstantinos Karatheodoris, to whom we owe everything.”
Eleni Antoniadou was named Woman of the Year in Science and Technology at the 2013 FDM Everywoman in Technology Awards. She was awarded for producing artificial organs as off-the-shelf technology. The technology, which was developed as part of a university project in 2009, has recently been used to save a patient who was suffering from late stage tracheal cancer, creating the very first fully functional artificial organ transplant in the history of medicine. In 2012 she joined the NASA Acadeamy as the top candidate among 1200 nominations. She has since accepted the poasition of Research Associate at the Biosciences Division/Mars Exploration Laboratory at NASA Ames in Silicon Valley, where she investigates the effect of radiation on the neurological system in order to protect astronauts while traveling in space.
Georgios Nikolaou Papanikolaou was a pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection, and inventor of the ‘Pap smear’. At a 1928 medical conference in Battle Creek, Michigan, Papanikolaou introduced his low-cost, easily-performed screening test for early detection of cancerous and precancerous cells. However, this potential medical breakthrough was initially met with scepticism and resistance from the scientific community. In 1954 he published another memorable work, the Atlas of Exfoliative Cytology, thus creating the foundation of the modern medical specialty of cytopathology.
Dimitri Mitropoulos was a conductor, pianist, and composer. He received international fame both as a major conductor and composer of the 20th century. Mitropoulos was noted as a champion of modern music, such as that by the members of the Second Viennese School. He wrote a number of pieces for orchestra and solo works for piano, and also arranged some of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works for orchestra. In addition, he was very influential in encouraging Leonard Bernstein's interest in conducting performances of Mahler's symphonic works.
Maria Callas was a Greek soprano and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic gift. Her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini, and, in her early career, the musical dramas of Wagner, and later, the works of Verdi and Puccini. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.
Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou professionally known as Vangelis, is a composer of electronic, progressive, ambient, jazz, pop rock, and orchestral music. He is best known for his Academy Award-winning score for the film Chariots of Fire, composing scores for the films Antarctica, Blade Runner, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Alexander, and the use of his music in the PBS documentary Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by Carl Sagan.
Nikos Galis or Nick Galis is a retired Greek professional basketball player. He was named one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1991, is an inaugural member of the FIBA Hall of Fame and was named one of the 50 Greatest Euroleague Contributors on February 3 2008. He averaged 33.3 points per game at the EuroBasket in 1983, 33.5 points per game at the 1986 FIBA World Championship, 37.0 points per game at the EuroBasket in 1987, 35.6 points per game at the EuroBasket in 1989, and 32.4 points per game at the EuroBasket in 1991. Galis was only a 1.83m tall combo guard. In every one of the games that Galis played in these tournaments, the entire defence of every opposing team focused on stopping his scoring outbursts.
